MarkupBridge / Import guide
How to import Frame.io annotations into Photoshop
A client circles an area to retouch or draws an arrow to a detail. MarkupBridge brings supported markup into your Photoshop document, so you can work with the feedback beside the image instead of recreating each mark.
Each imported mark gets its own layer, named after the review comment, inside one review group. Hide marks individually without changing your image. Open Review notes for full comments when a layer name is too short.

Before you start
- Install MarkupBridge through Adobe Marketplace on an Apple Silicon Mac with a supported version of Photoshop.
- Use an Adobe account with access to the Frame.io account, workspace, project and review you want to import.
- Use a standard, non-animated, 8-bit RGB or RGBA PNG in Frame.io. Open the matching image as an RGB Photoshop document with the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile, at 8- or 16-bit depth.
- An internet connection is required. Photoshop and Frame.io access are separate from the MarkupBridge subscription.
1. Add your image and feedback in Frame.io
Open your Frame.io workspace and project, then upload the PNG you want reviewed. Open the image in the review viewer. Add a comment and draw its markup on the image, then post the comment. Repeat for the other changes you want to capture.
Use clear, actionable comments, such as “Lift the shadow beneath the chair slightly.” These become useful layer names in Photoshop. Arrows, freehand marks and rectangles are useful examples; unsupported marks are reported rather than silently imported.
2. Open the matching PNG in Photoshop
Open the same original PNG you uploaded, or download that source from Frame.io and open it. Make it the active Photoshop document. A screenshot, thumbnail, cropped copy or unrelated image is not a substitute for the matching source.
3. Connect Adobe and choose your review
Open MarkupBridge from Photoshop’s Plugins menu. Select Connect Adobe and finish signing in in your browser. Return to Photoshop, then choose the correct account, workspace, project and source or version.
4. Import and work through the comments
Select Import markup. MarkupBridge checks the source against the active document before creating layers. After a successful import, expand the review group in Photoshop’s Layers panel. Toggle each mark’s visibility as you work, and use Review notes to read the full comments.
The imported markup is separate from your image. It is a snapshot of the review, not a live two-way sync with Frame.io.
5. Refresh when the review changes
If someone adds a project or updates feedback in Frame.io, use the refresh button beside Sign out. Check the selected source or version, then import again to bring in the updated review. Keep or remove older imported review groups as needed so you do not confuse two rounds of feedback.
If the import stops
Matching-document error: check that the correct original PNG is open and active. Confirm its dimensions and color settings, and avoid cropped or resized substitutes.
Missing project or source: refresh, confirm the selected account and workspace, and check that your Adobe account can access the content in Frame.io.
Skipped marks: read the import summary and review notes. Some annotation types or source encodings are unsupported. For help, send the visible support code to [email protected]; do not send passwords or customer files.
